What a wonderful surprise it was to discover that Genesys was chosen by Glassdoor as one of Glassdoor's Best Places to Work! The honor is especially meaningful knowing that it came from those who make Genesys what it is by living our values every day – our employees.
The best work environments are those that find ways to make people want to spend time there - but it’s easier said than done. Ultimately, what makes an employee feel their company is a genuinely great place to work? Money is nice, of course, but it’s not everything. The key differentiator is company culture, and for us that comes from within.
When in doubt, focus on your employees
All businesses encounter change, but the key is to remain focused on the people who make your company successful during strenuous times. After spinning off from Alcatel Lucent in 2012, Genesys strove to nurture company culture and maintain normalcy while the company experienced massive internal and structural changes. An engaged leadership team and open employee dialogue made all the difference in building and maintaining a supportive foundation for the long term.
We refer to the dynamic between leaders and employees at Genesys as the “family table,” where lively conversation occurs and relationships are strengthened. As a result, the leadership team and the employees have created a level of trust and support, resulting in both great work and excellent service to our customers.
Why internal alignment is so key
Creating opportunities for your team to come together is critical in maintaining culture. At Genesys, we create space for our community to come together globally, which encourages our culture to grow and develop organically. We use a variety of tools to facilitate interaction, including an intranet, webcasts and various external tools.
Additionally, our leaders are visible, which makes Genesys feel like a smaller company even as we grow. Quarterly all hands meetings align everyone on strategy and the state of the business, and our leadership team blogs and posts videos on a regular basis to share their individual voices and to encourage two-way conversations with employees. We truly believe that a supportive leadership team is the key to a strong, stable foundation for employees to root themselves in.
Know who you want to be – and why
If you don’t have a road map, you can’t be sure where you will end up. At Genesys, to be a place where employees are excited to come to work each day and feel like they can accomplish something worthwhile is important.
Some of the things we do in pursuit of having a truly iconic culture include efforts to:
- Ensure each Genesys office and community has their own identity while reflecting the corporate culture in ways that are meaningful locally.
- Focus on transparency, including being an Open Company on Glassdoor and having the conversation be the focus of our performance management process.
- Reinforce and embrace the common threads running through the company, including a passion for what we stand for, and a supportive environment to foster success and truly embracing diversity.
- Encourage and support grassroots initiatives through our employee driven Make a Difference charitable program.
- Foster a “be who you are, and be ok with it” attitude. We aren’t trying to be the sexiest company in Silicon Valley – just the most authentic.
