In Financial Hub of Singapore, Tech Jobs Are Growing Faster
Andrew Chamberlain

For decades, Singapore has shined as one of the world’s great financial and high-tech manufacturing centers. However, in recent years the Singapore economy has also transformed itself into a powerful tech hub as well.
A growing number of major U.S. tech employers today have significant operations in Singapore, including Amazon, Facebook and Google, along with major Asian tech giants such as Alibaba and Baidu. Just as New York City and Chicago have transitioned from financial center to tech hub in recent years -- with tech employers increasingly hiring from the large pool of “knowledge workers” attracted to the financial industry -- Singapore is positioned for similar gains in tech hiring in the coming decade.
Who are the top tech employers in Singapore today? And what jobs are they hiring for on Glassdoor? This analysis uses data from Glassdoor’s global jobs database to highlight the latest tech and finance hiring trends in Singapore today.

One factor fueling Singapore s rising tech hiring is the escalating U.S.-China trade war. Tech employers throughout Asia are increasingly looking to move jobs into neutral territories outside of the U.S. and China to sidestep tariffs. With abundant tech talent and proximity to growing Asian markets, Singapore is a natural choice -- something we expect to continue in 2019 and beyond.
A Bright Outlook for Hiring
As the Singapore economy moves into 2019, hiring remains strong. There are 52,090 open job postings in Singapore on Glassdoor, up roughly 40 percent from one year ago.(1) By comparison, there were 6.3 million open jobs in the U.S. on Glassdoor during the same period, up a much more modest 6 percent year-over-year. After a brief slowdown in hiring in Singapore in 2016 and 2017, job vacancies today are on the rise.

Tech Hiring Outpacing Finance
Today on Glassdoor, the total number of open tech job postings in Singapore actually outnumbers hiring in the finance industry. This is broadly consistent with what we see in the U.S. labor market as well -- in the United States, tech industry job postings outnumber the financial sector today by a roughly three-to-one ratio. As of November 2018, there were 4,715 unique jobs in the finance industry open on Glassdoor. By comparison, there were 5,806 open jobs in the three combined tech sectors we track: 3,072 open jobs in the computer software and hardware industry,1,418 open jobs in the modern tech and internet industry -- which includes many tech giants such as Google and Facebook -- and 1,316 open jobs in the more traditional information technology (IT) sector.

The Future of Knowledge Work in Singapore
The future of work in Singapore is likely to feature many more opportunities for “knowledge workers” -- those using data, software, and intellectual skills -- in the country’s growing tech and financial sectors. According to official figures from the Ministry of Manpower, tech and finance hiring is on the rise as a percentage of total open jobs. Tech and finance hiring has risen from 6 percent of open jobs between 2006 and 2013, to more than 12 percent as of June 2018 (see the figure below). This trend toward Singapore’s rising tech hiring is likely to accelerate in the coming decade.

Conclusion
Although Singapore has a well-deserved reputation as an Asian center for finance and high-tech manufacturing, it has also grown into a tech hub in recent years. Our analysis of online job postings on Glassdoor shows there are 5,806 open tech jobs hiring today in Singapore -- outpacing the nation’s 4,715 open finance jobs, with estimated pay reaching as high as SGD $19,600 per month for some senior-level tech roles. According to official figures, “knowledge worker” roles in tech and finance today make up more than one in 10 open jobs in Singapore today -- a share that has doubled since 2013. In the coming years, it’s likely that tech hiring will continue expanding its reach within Singapore’s job market. With a highly educated workforce, proximity to large Asian markets, and a pro-tech-investment policy stance, Singapore may be positioned to become one of the world’s top destinations for tech hiring in the coming decade.
