I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at ALDI (Sídney) in Jan 2020
Interview
Interview for corporate head office was conducted by two junior Merchandise Assistants / Category Assistants instead of HR people. This is even though the role is in a completely different department and was senior to the interviewers.
They were early 20s and it came across as very unprofessional. They said that they helped with recruitment even though their primary role is in Merchandise/ Buying.
As I was interstate they wanted to run the interview on FaceTime. I had an Android phone which they hadn’t planned for. The interviewers ran late (kept saying how “smashed” they were) and her phone battery ran out during the interview - which was in the morning.
They asked a lot about whether you shop at ALDI, favourite ALDI brands and products (aside from special buys). And why you like them etc. Felt more like customer research than a job interview.
As they are not HR or the Hiring Manager, they could not provide much detail on the job or salary.
Since they’re not trained or professionals in this area, they are looking for exact / like for like experience to tick every box. You will also have to explain how your experience is the same as the role requirements.
The other thing that was odd was them detailing the escalation and decision making process if there was a conflict between my Leader and other departments. Red flag.
Several red flags for me-
- Junior merch assistants conducting recruitment - obviously they expect you to perform duties way outside your usual area.
- detailing the escalation and conflict resolution process indicates cultural issues to me.
- poor IT. Business meetings should not be dependent on peoples personal mobiles.
- How busy they kept saying they were. They’re either glorifying busyness, understaffed or there is a hectic work envoy- all of which indicate a bad culture
If you interview for a corporate role, be prepared to talk about their product lines.
