      Human Resources Graduate Program Interview

      Mar 4, 2019
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Sídney
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at BAT (Sídney) in Feb 2019

      Interview

      1. Submit CV 2. Complete Numerical and Verbal Reasoning tests 3. Phone Interview 4. Community day The testing was simple enough. The phone interview was challenging because they didn't give you a date or time, so they called on an extremely inconvenient day and I had to ask if they could call back after 4pm. Phone interview I felt the current graduate really didn't give me the opportunity to demonstrate how I would be a good candidate. It went for 13 minutes which is not a long time. I questioned her about the company culture, her own personal experiences in the company, the challenges she faced during her time in the graduate program. I'm not sure if she liked it and she didn't really give any tonal cues if she liked me or not. I'm assuming not because I got a rejection email the following working day in the morning. Even though they accept people with humanities degrees on the application (Major: politics & international relations, Minor 1: philosophy, Minor 2: Modern History) in the interview she seemed extremely caught up with the fact that I hadn’t done an HR-based degree/major and formal HR work experience. I explained that I had only just completed my undergrad degree and I was in the process of getting experience. In my answer, I also told her that I had a successful interview at another company but had to wait until April for the internship to commence (since it was an informal application and not a company program). I also explained that when I decided I was interested in HR, through my personal network, I managed to meet two women from different companies in senior HR roles positions willing to mentor me and provide me with the skills necessary for an HR position. Judging from her tone she seemed extremely unconvinced and didn’t ask me any other questions. Overall I think they should have had more questions and it would I have been better if she was more willing to engage with my answers, not once did she ask me to explain further or ask why I did something in particular.
