      Senior Product Manager Interview

      Apr 19, 2022
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Declined offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Capital One in Feb 2022

      Interview

Lots of interviews (all remote these days). First was an HR screener, second was a few days later with a Senior Product manager, third was a week later and was a set of 4 interviews in 4 hours (known as 'Power Day'), and finally I had a large number of 'job fit' interviews with individual hiring managers to find the correct fit with me. Overall, I appreciated the rigor that goes into this, even if it is a huge commitment and a bit of roller coaster. Most of the early process was transparent and I never doubted the intent. It wasn't until I got passed the Power Day and into 'job fit' that I became frustrated with the experience. At this point, I received very little to no feedback from recruiters or managers which was a VERY unpleasant experience given that ambiguity was starting to affect my ability to easily leave my old job.

      Question 1

I'll add some insight on 'power day' (there are lots of examples on Glassdoor and they all seem relatively similar): there are four interviews each running one hour long with only a single break (so there is very little breathing room). My first was a 'product skills' talk with a couple of directors who had a sheet of questions they had to ask (this was stressed - we 'have to ask these') about my product experience to date. The second was a more behavioral interview focused on my soft skills. This one was for more relaxed than the other three and included a lot of 'typical' HR questions like what are your strengths/weaknesses, describe the best team you've ever worked with, how do you resolve conflict, etc. We've all had these interviews before... The third was the dreaded 'analyst case' which wasn't too bad at all. I had a few places where I got really flustered but ultimately did well enough to pass. Last was a 'product case' interview which I found to be a ton of fun. The interviewer gave me a multi-slide PPT deck with a bunch of business case elements and I had to pick a problem statement to drill into and address. If you enjoy problem solving and can articulate your thoughts, you'll be fine.

      Interview

First, there is a online assessment called Virtual Job Tryout. Once you pass it, a recruiter will approach to go over your past experience. If every thing is aligned, a Mini day will be scheduled. Once Mini Day is passed, a final interview called Power Day with 4 back-to-back interviews will be scheduled

      Interview

Avoid if possible. They don't care about your extensive experience, but just put you through their horrible process of solving accounting problems, and employees who raise their voice at you, and who are paper-pushing lifers from VA, but you're applying to a job in NYC, no one could tell me about working in NYC. I had a waitlist of 9 dept heads waiting to speak to me, cruising my LI. The first round interview was great. The second round was supposed to be 4 ppl but it was 6, all on Zoom. My first recruiter, who had high EQ, was excellent and was fired on the day of my 4-hour interview. He prepped me for break-even analysis and weights; they had me do basic math problems, adding and subtracting percentages. Maybe their product meetings are speed rounds of addition and subtraction calculations; no wonder there's no innovation. One VP was totally checked out and put up problems on a slide, with a verbal explanation, and went off-screen to do something else, then came back, raised hisvoice and called me by another name. The last interviewer basically told me there's no innovation. The new recruiter took a week to tell me they went back and forth on my candidacy, and I could apply again. Hell no. No wonder they're getting sued by a past employee who leaked emails and docs about him being let go bc he went on paternity leave.
