      IB Risk Summer Analyst Interview

      Feb 21, 2013
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through college or university. I interviewed at J.P. Morgan

      Interview

Superday was held at the JP Morgan headquarters and consisted of three 30 minute interviews all with VPs and EDs in different groups. They were generally behavioral, but be ready for anything. It was definitely difficult to gauge how I was doing throughout. During my first interview, the interviewer's first question was "do you have any questions for me?" That really threw me off, as it is usually the last question interviewers ask, not the first. Know about recent JP Morgan transactions, not just times when JP Morgan has appeared in the news. Otherwise, they definitely try to cater the questions to your experience and knowledge set. If you don't have a finance background, they won't ask you finance questions, and if they do, they will help you along. I happen to have a lot of experience with Russia and know a lot about it, so they tailored their questions to that. (e.g. What are the biggest economic challenges Russia faces today? If you were to invest in one sector of the Russian economy what would it be? What are the fixed costs associated with this sector? etc. etc.)

      Question 1

When bond prices increase, what happens to interest rates? Which is cheaper debt or equity? What are some recent JP Morgan transactions that you know of? What is it about JP Morgan and IB Risk that makes you want to work with us?

      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at J.P. Morgan in Jan 2011

      Interview

There was an interview. It was originally supposed to be two directors of the IB Risk group. Right before it was my turn to interview, the head director left as this was an on campus interview and a snow storm was developing. He wanted to make sure he could leave on time. The other woman interviewed me. I thought it went really well. We mostly just talked and the time flew by. I got an e-mail the next day that I wasn't selected for an additional interview.

      Question 1

There were no really difficult questions. We just talked. Mostly about my experience, a little about the current risk profile. I'm a master's student and I think I got a little too complex. It's never good to say something that is over the interviewer's head...
