Applied based on an internal referral.
A week later had 30minute first round video interview with hiring manager. Lost track of time so feeling it went well.
Following week invited to additional round of video interviews with individuals from engineering team and other engineering functions, 6-7 hours in all, spread over couple days, each segment lasting between 45-60minutes. All friendly and professional at this stage, nothing too difficult, went really well all round I thought.
Was told to expect quick decision. HR made commitment to provide feedback within 2 weeks.
After 4 weeks I contacted for an update, a polite and well worded correspondence, but met with zero response, no acknowledgement, just silence. Really poor communication etiquette.
Another few weeks go by, still no communication, no rejection or offer, obviously I assume I didn’t get it. Feedback of decision is the atleast applicants should expect for giving their time for interviews.
In summary, friendly people, but really poor communication, especially HR.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Talk through CV. Why Rivian? What opportunities do you see in this engineering domain? Challenges? How would you approach task?
The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Rivian (New York, NY) in Mar 2020
Interview
Interviews consist in an initial talk with an outsourced recruiter, then an on site marathonic interview with an HR person who has barely any idea what they ate doing other than a sales pitch about collaborative working (typical cheap stuff). Then an interview with a rather young enthusiastic engineer how has barely enough experience and brings theoretical examples of problems rather than actual hands-on stuff, finally an interview with the hiring manager who has lots of old school ideas yet valuable experience, but too little time to solve all the problems from bring up a department from scratch. Some miscommunication leads to very high expectations for the hire, with hints that there's going to be long unpaid overtime with the virtual promise of unlimited PTO.
Final the positive outcome of the interview hints an offer, but as they expect someone to give their life for less, apparently one has a high price tag that just leads to circles about whether or not they will either send an offer for lower (without knowing their benefits or other compensation) or just a thank you for your time after 3 months of little to no communication (ghosting)
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Rivian (Bloomington, IL) in Oct 2019
Interview
Long process with multiple rounds. Every individual I dealt with in the process was professional, but it was clear the company is extremely disorganized in terms of hiring strategy. When asking simple critical questions like, "in what city will I be working" "how much travel will there be" I could not get a straight answer. It seemed like the answer to this question had one answer when the process started and a different answer when I went in for the final round interview. At some points in the process I got same day responses and at other points there were week long delays.
Ultimately my biggest take away was that the company lacks a coherent strategy as they rush to assemble new teams.
