Phone call with HR. It was unexpected as I thought it was via Skype and she seemed not as friendly as how I imagined being given the company's culture. Besides that, okay interview experience, less than 15 minutes.

Question 1
Tell me about yourself, Why did you want to join Shopee, Strengths, Weaknesses
I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Shopee (Singapur) in Apr 2020
Interview
My interview was through a Skype call and below are the reasons why I had a negative experience.
Disclaimer: My opinions are subjective and they are based on a personal experience with a recruiter in Shopee. My intention is not to put a blame on anyone and I sincerely hope that the management could look into their interview processes. As a HR practitioner myself, I believe Shopee recruiters can do better than this.
1) I expected a video interview through Skype so I had my camera ready. However, it turned out to be a voice call. I didn't know how to react so I kept my camera on. Throughout the session, I was staring at myself on the screen as I answer the questions. The recruiter could have better facilitated this interview so the candidate could be at ease. I thought this was quite unprofessional.
- I believe my interviewer was a Chinese national. She asked if I could speak mandarin and wanted me to answer some of the interview questions in mandarin. The reason she gave was that sometimes her colleagues communicate with one another in mandarin. I wasn't expecting to hear this. I would understand if my role requires me to communicate with colleagues based in China or with customers from Chinese-speaking countries but it wasn't! This was also not a listed requirement on the job description. My mandarin wasn't bad but I still struggled to find the right words to express myself during the interview. I felt judged the entire time, and I think recruiters shouldn't make the candidates feel this way. Now I'm wondering if this is a criteria that the recruiter looked at purely because she has a preference for colleagues who could converse with her in mandarin.
- I did not receive any email or updates on the status of my job application. It will be great if there are some follow-ups.
