I talked to one of Shopee Malaysia's HR associates at a networking session in Kuala Lumpur and she kindly explained to me about the company, its culture, and the opportunities they have for fresh graduates. She seemed really hyped about the company so it made me quite hopeful. I then decided to make an application.
A week after, I receive an email to invite me for an interview. So I went to the HQ all jolly and positive. They brought me to an interview room, and I talked to an HR associate for 10-15 minutes and was asked about my education background, my interests and skills. Then I was given three sheets of case scenarios which took me around 20-30 minutes to finish.
Then I did another interview with a marketing associate which was a bad experience for the both of us. I doubt that the interviewer had read my CV as they seemed surprised when I mentioned my education background (which has nothing to do with marketing and I applied because I was not told that they needed someone with advanced marketing knowledge).
The interviewer cut me off in the middle of my answer and they failed to ask important questions about my skills, achievements and past experiences which did involve marketing and content writing. The interviewer said something negative which I'd rather not mention here but it was really unprofessional. Not only was I spoken to in a negative manner, I was also not given the chance to talk about my skills and past experiences.
It was my first horrible interview. But I hope that this doesn't happen again because job candidates don't deserve to be treated so dismissively and with disrespect. Nevertheless, I'm glad that I didn't get the job as I realised then the company and I just can't vibe.
However, to those who are interested in applying with Shopee, don't let my experience hold you back. There are many other friendly employers there. I heard that it's a fun working environment. Everyone who works there is young and has a lot of experiences to share. You never know if you are a good fit for this organisation if you don't try. So go for it and I wish you all the best!
