Worse Job I've Had in 40 Years

Pros

Friendly co-workers who want to do a good job.

Cons

Very myopically profit-oriented at the expense of employee morale. Employees always warned that they are next in line for layoff if they don't meet billability expectations. Does NOT support mentoring, training or professional development despite what their career ads say. Management refuses to pay for training; makes employees pay out of own pocket. The people who do the hard work and produce the product don't get the bonuses. Bonuses are only handed out to managers who bullwhip their staff into coming in under budget on projects. Top management not trust-worthy-speak out of both sides of mouth. Everyone is so fearful of going over budget and charging to overhead that no one helps each other and junior level staff are thrown to the dogs to fend for themselves. Salaries not commensurate with cost of living. Benefits are minimal. Management has no training in communicating to staff or in conducting performance reviews.

Pros

Opportunities to work on very large and interesting projects. Opportunities to work in other parts of the world. Opportunities to work and learn from very experienced people.

Cons

Too many incompetent managers and project managers. Poor communication between management and project discipline leads. Endless, useless emails and demands from the HR department - I DO NOT WORK FOR YOU!! 13 years I worked for UMA Engineering, 2 for Aecom - they ruined what used to be a very good company to work for. My benefits were very good before the merger - thanks for nothing AECOM! VERY poor salary and bonus structure. Career advancement it seems is only possible through placing ones cranium at a agreeable angle to that of your supervisors rectal cavity - talent seems to mean nothing.

The Future Looks Bleak

Pros

The people are awesome and very talented. Flexible working conditions and good work life balance (in some teams, not all).

Cons

It's a big company so you can sometimes get forgotten. I had someone in my team literally taking multiple days off "working from home" and doing half days without the management noticing they were rorting the system. This may be a pro if you are a lazy person but personally I like to work hard and feel like I did a good job - not slack off and get away with it. Promised a lot in the graduate program, then cancelled planned trips due to budget cuts and cut the overall program short. Very disappointed. My management were useless. Wasted company money and favoured certain team members they were friends with over those working hard and keeping the team afloat with projects. Then when redundancies came they got rid of the hard workers and kept their idiot mates. That's when I left. I suspect further redundancies in 2019 - I certainly would have let them go if I was an executive. You can't lose the company hundreds of thousands of dollars and get away with it forever. You can't get a decent pay rise unless you threaten to leave. This is well known across AECOM Australia.
