Waiting in line to die

Pros

I get a paycheck every other week. It's enough to survive in Manhattan on. The projects are actually decently interesting. I have learned a lot, and gotten some good experience for my resume ;-). And now that my 401k vested, it's time to put that experience to work.

Cons

The company is completely disfunctional. Engineers are expected to do the Accountants' jobs. What the accountants actually do makes no sense, and only makes your life more difficult. It takes a month to get the 6 approvals necessary to install new software on your computer. Internal competition is rampant. Offices directly compete with each other over work. The idea of "working on a team" is non-existent. Opportunity for advancement is minimal. As a technical person you become "the guy" of something, but have no opportunity to ever do anything else, which is not exactly what a 25 year old engineer is looking to do. The other option is to become a Project Manager which is a High Risk/Low Reward position. Basically, the only way I've seen the company win projects is to vastly under-price the work. It then becomes the PM's job to pick up the pieces. And when the project inevitably loses money, it's the PM's fault. If by some miracle you do manage to finish a project on schedule and budget, there is no reward. I really don't understand how this company can be making money. Basically, working here is like waiting in line to die. I'm still alive, but what's the point. I look at people who have been working here for a long time and either feel sorry for them, or want to throw up. Time to move on.

Pros

Good experience and development programs for graduates and other young engineers Great opportunities for engineers not interested in being engineers

Cons

The list of cons is too long to mention and one only has to read other reviews on Glassdoor to realise that this global company has serious global issues. The problems are worldwide, not unique to one single office and a reflection of the type of company AECOM is. AECOM clearly follows the Wal Mart or Home Depot model of annihilating the competition by buying every company they can and poaching employees from other consulting companies in order to achieve what it thinks is world domination. Then AECOM treats everyone like garbage thinking that their employees have limited options. The people who are appointed as managers have negligible leadership skills but as long as they can converse in management speak and lie through their teeth they will go far in AECOM. The primary role of managers is to attack and threaten any employee with low billability as if it is their own fault. There is no opportunity for employees to provide feedback on the performance of their "managers" or "leaders". No-one ever asks a lowly engineer if they are happy, valued, satisfied or appreciated because AECOM management does not care about its employees. Another issue with AECOM's endless acquisitions is that employees from different legacy companies now find themselves competing for the same work. The attitude amongst employees has changed from one of co-operation prior to being acquired by AECOM to one of desperate, deceitful and ruthless competition. AECOM is a toxic, cut throat, evil company that brings out the worst in its employees. I even had numerous books and reference documents stolen from my desk by my competitors, sorry I mean "colleagues". The managers have no integrity, honesty, decency or ethics. I am thoroughly looking forward to the day I leave AECOM which will be very soon. It will be my happiest day there. My advice to anyone contemplating joining AECOM is to do yourself a favour and find another company. My advice to anyone currently working for AECOM is to look elsewhere because, despite AECOM's best efforts and its own propaganda, there are other opportunities.

Pros

The company overall is massive. There is a lot of opportunity if you wanted to relocate, move around position wise within the company or simply get some travel in as part of the number of positions that offer field work (if you're into that sort of thing)

Cons

From my personal experience, I never felt like more than a number while working there. I worked hard, I went above and beyond but the result was always the same. A lazy year end review from a manager who had no idea what I do or how I do it with an overall rating that had no true reflection to the effort and work I put in (despite my detailed and well thought out self assessments). It was my impression that the company motto is to shy away from praising hard workers with the fear that they will "get comfy and slack off". The whole "excellence is unachievable because there is always room to grow" mentality. Obviously this is only my experience. Its possible other teams in other departments ran differently. But after 5 years of hard work only to get a measly 2% cost of living adjustment year after year (which honestly didnt even equate to the REAL cost of living increase during that time) I had enough and left.
