Poor management

Pros

High pay compared to industry. Some areas in IT are hiring. Popular name brand. Large multi national company. Good bonus program.

Cons

Zero work life balance. Extremely turnover at senior management level. Layoffs of many tenured employees. No advancement as management is hiring from outside and not promoting from within. Just changed 401k match that provides less benefits to the staff. Terrible move.

Bureaucracy

Pros

Colleagues are great - very smart, genuinely care about clients. Pay and benefits are industry standard.

Cons

Pretty much everything else. This can be a highly politically charged environment. Many colleagues are matrixed to several managers, and no one knows what the others are doing. Everything is exceedingly bureaucratic. There are left over turf wars from the huge merger with Hewitt, and pity the employee who doesn't duck for cover when the fur gets to flying. Senior management gets one star, only because zero stars is not an option.

Large company run by lawyers and accountants.

Pros

As a large company, there are many opportunities to transfer to other jobs and locations.

Cons

McKinsey was brought in years ago to organize the business, which it sorely needed after years of almost-random acquisitions, but it went a bit overboard at applying a cookie-cutter approach that often did not apply to certain business segments. The company took the outsourcing idea to ridiculous levels. A poetic example: When I quit the firm after 14 years of service I learned that my exit interview was outsourced to another firm. Case closed.
