Employee Benefits Department: A Hierarchical Culture

Pros

There are some open-minded and forward thinking teams within the company. You are in luck if you end up working for them.

Cons

Overall, the Employee benefits department is very hierarchical. Those that have been in the company for a longer period of time tend to throw their weights around junior employees (even if you do not belong to their team). As a result, learning is quite hard for the more junior ones. Questions asked were merely cast aside with statements like "Just do as what I told you to do", and if you ask questions on why the seniors do things in a certain manner when it comes to your work, it is deemed as though you do not respect them or that you are being "rude". I find it really hard to learn to my fullest potential in this kind of environment. There are also certain leaders that use fear-mongering tactics to get work done around the team, which is pretty unhealthy and unsustainable in the long run. Many times, the reason why do we things is because we scared the "boss" will get angry, and not because we understand why we have to do it. Even though Aon is an MNC itself, the employee benefits department very much behaves like an SME in Singapore. Hold your horses if you think you are joining an MNC here.

Don't stay for longer than a year or two if at all

Pros

Stable company, looks good on the CV

Cons

Hot desking (only enough desks for 70% staff, forced to sit in booths/ meeting rooms often). The firm is run by nepotistic brokers and a distant hq in Chicago - supporting functions such as analytics are seen as cost centres. Employees are expected to produce more with less people in teams when they leave. It can take months / years for hr etc to replace people that leave (if at all). Despite year after year of significant organic growth, the salary pot each year is capped at 1% of total and is available to those earning under 100k only. In practise this means around 2-3k pay rise if you’re lucky otherwise you can expect to be flat year on year or below rate of inflation. Lots of bureaucracy and politics. 12-16 hour days during renewal season and occasional weekends in the office. Account execs on large clients or those with potentially large redundancy settlements can do no wrong in the firms eyes
