Pros

Reputation of company, benefits (Medical, stock purchase plan, 401(k), etc), location. Employees are doing work that is meaningful and challenging. There is opportunity to move to other departments, depending on your manager. In a troubled economy, my position was stable.

Cons

Each department worked in a silo, no information sharing. The department I worked in did not plan well for customer needs, which required employees to work overtime on a regular basis. Most overtime could have been avoided by better planning and giving more authority to senior underwriters. Employees with families were "allowed" to leave on time and single employees were expected to stay and complete projects.

Pros

They have a good company name - it is well respected in the industry. The stock performance has been strong and you do receive options after a couple of years . They also have good benefits. Continuing education opportunites are pretty good within the company intranet.

Cons

Management doesn't respect college recruits. The salary sucks in comparison to other firms in the industry.
