Pros

No need to specialize in one industry, great training, and more interaction with managers and partners. BDO flex program allows work to be performed that fit better with employees' family schedules and other commitments. Higher employee retention in recent years due to improvements in benefits and better distribution of work amongst employees. Technology is finally catching up to the growth in the audit practice and is strong.

Cons

Long hours, but similar to other public accounting firms. Bonus and compensation increase potential is small until the manager level, even for high performers. Some clients are taken on just for the need to grow the office and firm, not because the resources fully exist to staff it - this is similar to my friends at other firms.

Pros

People you work with are great people with the occasional very poor one as with any company, getting bonuses is nice and can be good most times better than big 4,

Cons

Very tollerent of poor supervisors, no mechanism for feedback on upper level and direct management or any care to find out, lack of giving credit to the right person beyond direct supervisor, after that it goes to the supervisor and the reverse is true where screw-ups get passed to those who the supervisor points the figer at.

Pros

It's a great place with lots of upward mobility. The management and associates mingle very often and it's a very family-oriented work environment. Plus it gives you the best of both worlds: "Big 4" exposure to public accounting while also minimizing the extensive travel and work hours. The local firms are too small in my opinion to get the full excitement, while in the Big 4 someone can end up auditing "cash" for weeks! This way even associates here can take part in a full audit with managers and partners.

Cons

Oftentimes the company name BDO is not recognized by others. Even though it's ranked as the top 10 accounting firms in the world, I often have to explain to others that BDO is an accounting firm that is very highly ranked.
