Pros

Smart people, truly some of the best in the industry. Pretty good pay for being straight out of school, especially given the hours (compare to banking). Depending on team (and this really depends), may be given good work, not just analyst grunt work.

Cons

Pay doesn't scale to effort and can leave employees for want of meritocracy. For those not in revenue-generating roles (investment and trading), "meritocracy" is subjective. No incentives for mentorship, so this often goes by the wayside; no comparison to tech and consulting where you have assigned mentors to look after your advancement.

Pros

it's a big company and there are good opportunities in a wide range of different team to high performing people. it's a highly respect name to have in your resume and you can learn a lot from senior management

Cons

Politics is all what matters when comp/promotions are decided. The internal mobility thing are just nice words, but not encouraged in practice. If you have an old school manager, good luck with that.

Pros

As one of the most elite firms in the industry, BlackRock is able to attract and often retain some of the best people in the industry who often really enjoy the challenge of their jobs. In my experience, if you are able to contribute measurably to your group, you will be given lots of responsibility very quickly.

Cons

BlackRock is big and getting bigger, resulting in increasing bureaucracy, though this will depend on the size and hierarchical depth of your group. Having a lot of friends in the tech sector, I sometimes feel stifled by the rigidity of promotion in finance, where promotion is only assessed biannually; differentiation is this regard is only achieved in that the top people are promoted every two years and those who fall behind are simply promoted slower.
