Extremely toxic culture

Pros

-Benefits: decent, but by no means best in the industry. -Resume building: Blackrock is a recognizable and respected company (depending on who you ask). -Systems: Aladdin is a powerful tool used across many firms in the industry. It’s good experience and helpful to know for future job opportunities.

Cons

-Culture: Very negative, toxic place to work. People are overworked, underpaid, and downright miserable. Majority of the staff are not willing to help. You can’t ask a question without being belittled or made to feel incompetent. Tons if workplace drama. Managers crying at their desks after being yelled at in meetings. Cursing, name-calling, bullying are all very present here. The least supportive environment in which I have ever worked. -Return to Office policy: 4 days in, 1 day WFH (currently). Constant rumors flying about returning to 5 days. Your days are tracked by badge swipes into the building and everyone tries to find loopholes around it, but upper management knows and will call you out to your manager. -Pay: subpar and there is no bargaining power with such a large company. Whether you are hired with 10 years of experience or 0, the pay will be the same. Annual raise ranges from 1.7%-2% (confirmed with multiple employees, not just me). -Hours: long hours (in office) and pressure from everyone to stay late. Made to feel guilty for prioritizing work/life balance. -Flexible Time Off policy: advertised as “unlimited PTO days” but if you take more than your colleagues, you will be reprimanded for it come year-end reviews. -Layoffs: 3 or 4 rounds of layoffs in the last 2 years. There is little job security. Ruthless process.

Pros

-Good benefits -Looks good on a CV, lots of opportunities when you leave

Cons

- I cannot emphasise this enough, DO NOT TRUST YOUR MANAGER. The culture of the company is that your manager will make promises without any intention to keep it to push you for better performance. If you dare to challenge your manager on an undelivered promise they will deny it ever happened - even if you have evidence - and your career is over at the firm. Good managers are either fired or harassed until they resign, while terrible managers get promoted for abusing everyone below them. This is the worst management culture I have ever seen. -Work hours are completely insane, often no new position is opened after a person leaves and the team is just expected to pick up the extra tasks. -Salary is only at market level when you join, after few years you will be severly underpaid. Bonuses are very minimal -Be prepared for multiple diversity and inclusion trainings while also hearing how awesome the new business with China is. The hypocrisy of this firm is astonishing -The company prides itself on being transparent but it is really not. For example most of the time if you want to trasfer internally, after everything is agreed your manager will ask you to wait 6M-1Year so they can better plan it. Then, your manager stops the transfer without any reason after months of your time and ask you to stay like it has any chance. The truth is that you can only transfer into cheaper countries.

Pros

Having the BlackRock name on your resume garners respect and is great for your career long term. There are few good teams and if you have a role there, you’ll have a generally good experience. Unlimited vacation is nice but doesn’t make up for the gap in compensation.

Cons

Where to begin. * Pays well below market rate. * Highly political and not a meritocracy as management claims. * Mediocrity thrives here. * High turnover over the last couple of years with the culture carriers leaving. * HR that never investigates actual cases of bias, exclusion, harassment or retaliation. BlackRock has a great PR team and management has positioned themselves as a place that’s’ treating employees well, paying for performance, championing diversity & inclusion, and doing what is morally correct. This all couldn’t be farther from the truth! BlackRock’s comp structure hasn’t kept up with the market and you can expect to be paid 40% below what competitors pay. When you raise this they basically tell you that you can leave and make 50% more elsewhere. The firm is highly political and is far from the meritocracy they proclaim to be. The promotion process is full of bias and they are failing at promoting people with different ethnic backgrounds, even though management proclaims diversity makes the firm better. Mediocrity thrives at BlackRock as high achieving individuals are leaving at alarming rates. Turnover has been abnormally high the last year and a half. Gender and racial bias reign supreme in certain divisions of the firm. They fail at supporting and promoting diverse employees and especially women of color regardless of strong performance. Bias and exclusion run high at BlackRock with instances of exclusion, harassment, bias and retaliation being flat ignored by HR and their policies are a complete joke. Managers are supposed to report these issues to HR immediately and they don’t. I’ve experienced and also witnessed multiple cases of exclusion and harassment but nothing has ever been done to remedy these situations. HR will listen to you and say they have to investigate and then get back to you. They never actually do. Meanwhile the perpetrators of these issues are promoted and given more responsibility. While they have made tiny strides on recruiting diverse talent into their analyst program, they struggle with retention and you’ll see very little diversity above VP. My suggestion, work here for a couple years to have on your resume and then leave.
