Pros

Very bright people and very good name to have on your resume. The reputation of this firm will go a long will in furthering you career.

Cons

Where to start? Culture is exclusive so if you're a non-Ivy be ready to feel like an outcast. Hours were ridiculous and not worth the average salary/bonus. After being promoted to Associate I was essentially still working analyst hours; even the bosses put in super long work days (12 hours is standard, often longer than that). Certain bosses designated to be the quasi-HR point persons in the risk group were unprofessional and often crossed boundries - any complaints will get you labeled as a wuss. There are some lawsuits waiting to happen at this shop. Competition is so cut-throat that training is often lacking (trainers doesn't want trainee to have an edge on him).

Pros

Average level of job competence at BlackRock seemed higher than at many other organisations I had worked, from who it was possible to learn a lot As a company, it had strong products across all major asset classes - bonds, equities, real estate and alternatives Senior management actually understand investing in financial markets, unlike many asset managers. This focus is reflected throughout the organisation

Cons

Seemed to be a perpetual disconnect between IT and the business Didn't seem to be good communication between certain groups and teams Integration of product groups which had been structurally separate seemed slow The UK business (ex MLIM) didn't seem to mesh all that whole-heartedly with the BlackRock culture

Pros

The best reason to work for BlackRock would be job stability. They are not a hire and fire kind of a firm rather they believe in being understaffed. The average age of employees is lower compared to other firms. They hire from some of the top colleges. There are "some" brilliant people you feel proud to work with. The company believes in respect for everyone and the senior members are very communicative. The career opportunity is limited although they say that you can move around in the firm and do what you like. Pretty good at food and travel allowance

Cons

There is absolutely no work-life balance at this place. They are always understaffed and in a group like Portfolio Analytics you are looking at a 70-75 hours week. The compensation is low compared to the hours you put in. The work atleast in the first year is repetitive and gets monotonous. The firm seems to have passed on knowledge through the word of mouth. The systems/processes are not well documented. The attrition rate is high.
