Pros

It's always nice to say you worked at this level in the worlds largest asset manager. The bonuses when we were BGI were great. It's yet to be seen what they'll turn out like at the end of a full year in the merged BlackRock, even so the compensation package is pretty good. You won't have to spend hours writing Powerpoint presentations to senior management. Working examples work best to convince people.

Cons

Technology issues and a lack of anything approaching a mature software development process results in most folks being tied up in a daily routine of production emergencies and strong-arm tactics. A preoccupation with reinventing the wheel on technology problems which have been solved in the larger finance software community. The solutions that are produced aren't very good. Communication is rather poor. The culture is not one which values diversity of thought or inclusion.

Pros

BlackRock is a good name to have on your resume. The company is great if you don't want to have to adhere to processes, because they don't have them.

Cons

But that's OK, it's also a fine place to work if you don't mind being treated like a simpleton. Having been a long time BGI person, and having been sucked into the BlackRock void has given me new perspective on my longevity with the company. Which is zilch. What the company wants now is cogs, not thinkers. My job was more like an old line from a pizza commercial which comes to mind, "Oh boy, I'm helping now, go to the fridge, get the cheese." Management wants all the control, all the decisions, and all the thoughts to be theirs, and nobody else's. They don't get the concept of thinking out of the box. They are in the box, and know every inch of that box.
