Pros

Well reputed brand Investment products and lines of business are interesting and well recognised Friendly family culture which is difficult for most corporates to retain (inversely can be suffocating)

Cons

The family culture can be suffocating at times as it felt like the firm had to be the centre of the universe Single-minded approach to doing things, processes are so substandard and siloed, the right-hand does not know what the left hand is doing. Micro management, command and control Very political, department felt juvenile at times This department is not built on a culture of best practice, people do not take the strategic view or approach, but rather a localised approach of individual team siloes, muddling through as they go along. Trying to have a conversation about standard best practice is met with defensiveness, aggression or dismissal. Very process oriented, little check and challenge mindset to see if the so-called process is the best, up to current standards or even necessary! No self-evaluation, they just stick to doing things because “that is how we have always done it”. For a company with such a well reputed name, I was surprised that the standard of personnel is not the best as you would find in say the equivalent respected top tier investment banks such as Goldman Sachs or JP Morgan, both of which I have also worked for. Part of the underlying cause is because many employees are lifers and so do not have experience elsewhere to act as a comparable, secondly, the pay is below market rates for most roles, so the best in the market are unlikely to be attracted to a 40% salary/rate drop. Glad I got the brand on my CV but have worked in better places, ie the standard of work is much higher elsewhere.

Pros

Well established company; good on resume competitive benefits and perks

Cons

Overall it just wast a great fit for me. Long hours and no work life balance. expect to be on call 24/7, even while on vacation. Their "Inclusion and diversity" program is only for the front-end people who make money for the company. Work from home is not for everyone and definitely not for assistants. a lot of politics - if you don't 'click' with your manager/team right away, then you're pretty much on your own. the team i was in had a cliquish environment. - if you're looking for mentorship, this isn't the place for you. people are too busy to try to help or "mentor" you. - you only get feedback during your mid-year and year-end review, until then its all mind games (at least on the team i was in). they are very good at highlighting your mistakes

Pros

Good name on the resume Good non-cash benefits - Top notch health insurance, one of the best maternity & paternity in HK, annual leave increase with length of tenure Job safety - Higher turnover than most buy side peers, therefore jobs for those who haven't leave yet are pretty safe

Cons

Poor compensation - Your personal or even team performance have almost no impact to the bonus no matter you are in front/back office, as the company is big enough that there is always a region/business that is not performing. Forget about pay raise to catch up with local inflation, because you ain't getting any raise if you NYC colleagues are not getting theirs. Work life balance - Buy side pay with sell side hours, poor support from overseas requires one to keep emailing, calling people in US / UK at night just to get people do what they suppose to do. Bureaucracy - Very top heavy firm with lots of talkers and little doers. Growth is slowing therefore senior management's effort is more focus on getting more business / functions under their umbrella to secure their own position.
