Pros

Pay is more than reasonable, especially for employees in zero-risk-taking positions. Most people are easy to get a long with.

Cons

Firm is dominated by 3rd and 4th tier managers which leads to horrible group dynamics and growth. Most managers are legacy employees that would not make it anywhere else.

I gave BlackRock a chance, but it remains dreadful

Pros

BlackRock is the biggest fund manager on the block, so it has the potential for great scale and domination of the asset management business. There are a couple of good managers.

Cons

Working in the business may be better, but London IT is a sorry department to be in. Decent senior managers are like needles in a haystack. Every time we have a senior manager addressing us we hear how great everything is but it is normally a case of The Emperor's New Clothes. Central control from New York is a death grip. Autonomy is not tolerated. Experienced people are given trivial jobs to do to "prove themselves". Sharing of information between teams is poor. Documentation is inadequate - the "Aladdin Way" has to be prised from key developer's heads.

Midtown location. Salary. Dedication of co-workers.

Cons

I can only speak for the technology team. Members of management were promoted without proper qualifications (or training) during the BGI acquisition. Management structure has become "fat", and ineffective....synonymous to an Administrative Assistant in an Managing Director role. There is a large gap between management and their subordinates.
