Pros

Some great people. Some rewarding work.

Cons

The organisation is by far the worst org I have ever worked at. It's toxic culture coupled with the bleak financial situation is enough to drive anyone potty. The organisation is currently facing financial hardship (which is public knowledge, google British Council financial situation), and is so close to becoming insolvent. Loads of redundancies are currently taking place and they have just offered a Voluntary Exit programme for any staff to take voluntary redundancy. Currently going through yet another transformation, where more people will become redundant. I would think twice before getting caught up in this sinking ship. Pay is rubbish, bonuses are non-existent, and development? I don't think they have ever heard of developing their staff. If you are looking to work in a toxic culture, with no opportunities and hierarchal issues, this is the place for you...

Pros

The kids were nice, on the whole.

Cons

I had a truly horrendous experience as an English Language Assistant. I was placed at two schools in the suburbs of Paris and was given no support whatsoever. Considering that these jobs are aimed towards either undergraduates or recent graduates you would expect some kind of communication - yet I had none. Very little help was given to find accommodation and I lived in a youth hostel for weeks. My "responsable" was as useless as a chocolate teapot and shouldn't have been given this title. I met her once. The teachers at the school were vile and expected me to have the same skills and knowledge as a qualified teacher, which is ridiculous, as I had received 3 days' training. They did things such as changed the days the school was open without informing me and organised a strike without informing me, so that I turned up at the school and only a few supply teachers were there and barely any of the kids. The headmistress of one school yelled at me in front of her class. I wrote a 2000-word complaint to the British Council detailing all of my experiences but received no reply. Having worked in the Civil Service since then, I now know that there is no accountability in any of the public sector so I imagine my letter was ignored as nobody wanted to deal with it. These schools aren't checked to see whether they are suitable for young assistants - the staff didn't want me there, and made this extremely clear.

Pros

Decent amount of paid holidays, paid sick leave.

Cons

No longer a beacon of education in language teaching and teacher training. Sh**** upper management and a school now run by sales and marketing rather than an academic team. Teachers told to give feedback as nothng more than a box-ticking exercise. No one heeds any input from teachers or Senior Academic Staff. More interested in bums on seats, even if those seats are filled with highly disruptive, dysfunctional SEN students who should not be given a place. Even mid-management is willing to sacrifice the 10+ other students' right to a calm, focused learning environment if it means keeping the money paid by the uber-SEN's parents. 'Kids won't really complain about it, will they, ? We only see them once a week,' think management. Disgusting. Furthermore, the organization has been eviscerated from within by poor management decisions and bullshittery involving cookie-cutter approach to centres across the globe. No longer teaching to the local context. Sinking ship that started losing it's identity pre-Covid.
