Pros

Given five promotions in six years for work above and beyond. Found anyone wanting promotion had to press the flesh with the right people and work the politics. Hard work and awards alone weren't enough. Leadership was sometimes lacking. I went four months on one team and we did not have a manager in that time. Team was eventually absorbed into other groups. Corporate perks that can be used in the community are great, if you can afford them.

Cons

Not family friendly, despite what you hear. I was written up and nearly fired for missing one day to bury a family member. Missed one day of work and immediately let my manager know and returned with an obituary. Nearly fired again when child hospitalized for serious illness. Shared news immediately with my then boss and he threatened to fire me, as my child was struggling for life in the PICU. Company values performance more than anything else and nobody in leadership wants to hear about problems or issues. Many colleagues came to me almost daily for answers that should've come from managers.

Pros

Great Medical, Dental and Vision benefits

Cons

Layoff is the order of the day. There is a regular massive layoff due to what the senior leadership describe as 'restructuring'. Capital One is so convinced they will lay people off regularly that they have a Career Development Center office in their Richmond location and works with a company called LHH to help their laid off employees transition out of the company. Additionally, the annual employee performance review is not based necessarily on how well you have performed over the past year but how you compare to others in the same level but who may not be doing anything related or close to what you are doing. Your annual bonus depends on how well your manager can represent you in the presence of other managers and/or how well or badly everybody in your level did over the previous year.
