Pros

The pay checks never bounce and there is always more than enough work to keep one busy. Some of the managers really do try to make the corporate policies bearable. If you are going to work at DISH, try to get a position in a field location. It is much less political and micro-managed than the corporate headquarters.

Cons

They have no flexibility on work schedule, make you badge in and give you a written warning if it snows and you are late due to traffic. You are expected to get a hotel room at your expense near the office if the weather is going to be bad, so that you are sure to arrive by 9:00 am. The benefits don't cover pshycological care so if anyone in your family needs a counselor or psychiatrist to help deal with an issue, you are on your own. Vacation never goes past 3 weeks so the guy who works there 3 years gets as much vacation as the guy who works there 23 years. They will work you until you drop. Guys have been carried out on a stretcher.

Pros

If you are competent, your job is pretty secure and in many cases not that challenging in terms of workload.

Cons

Be sure to start off with plenty of self-esteem because the complete contempt with which upper management treats employees of Dish Network will ensure that you understand exactly what you are worth to the company. Things like indefinitely delaying reviews and pay increases without explanation and secretly cutting benefits each year without really mentioning it will trim any external validation of self worth you might be suffering from.

Pros

Great place to learn different things in the software development realm. The "worker bees" are a great bunch of folks. Some of the smartest people around. Fun, good people to work with. I like the team I'm on, my daily work, and my direct manager.

Cons

The IT leadership is incompetent. They fired the "low end performers" in January, but the real idiots are the CIO, VPs and Directors. They are more concerned with "not making waves" than they are with doing the right thing. They have no idea how to manage an IT release in regards to capacity management and standing up to Charlie and the COO. They have no idea how to stand up to other execs. Therefore, we are constantly working abusive overtime (No joke) and releasing marginal products (hey ,as long we didn't take down a call center, its a success ...) The IT leadership has now idea how to manage people, except to crack the whip more.
