Underwhelming and shortsighted

Pros

Strong reputation in emergencies, clearly dedicated staff, less bureaucratic than many other NGOs making it more agile to pursue different opportunities in programmes.

Cons

Mandate and program direction is poorly communicated and understood. Operational systems needs significant improvement. Technically strong in protection related work, however other program areas are underdeveloped and uncoordinated. Regional and HQ have on again off again relationships with COs making support highly unpredictable. Lastly, salaries are really no longer competitive with the drop in the Euro and the imposition of a 10% "solidarity pool" deduction meant to offset taxation losses in other countries. This in particular is high untransparent.

Dear colleague, Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear you had a negative experience of DRC. We take your comments on board for further discussion. During 2017-19 we have the largest investment ever in DRC's history, launching new IT systems which should ideally address some of your concerns. /Marcos - Talent Management

Pros

DRC offers a good challenge and learning experience or the independant-minded manager. People at HQ are very humane and genuinely take everyone's well-being at heart. Being much less taxed on my salary than a Dane, I can say that the salary and benefits are among the highest you can have by working for a humanitarian NGO (i.e.: non-UN, non-ICRC). Very professional and knowledgeable staff when it comes to Program.

Cons

DRC is too decentralized, most Country Directors are local barons, using every nepotistic trick in the book to hire people they like without any consideration for competence. Support aspects (admin, finance, logistics and security) are seemingly considered as "optional", making it a sub-par NGO on that level. Donor-driven organization lacking a proper, standard program identity ("we do eveything but healthcare" approach). Sweatshop (80 hrs.+/week job, every week of the year). Over-reliant on national staff for key, senior positions, especially in terms of logistics and administration.
