Pros

Dell provides a very dynamic and energetic work environment. There is a lot of opportunity for a hard working professional to shine and progress. Compensation package is very competitive.

Cons

While the company is excellent to work for, it is best suited for limited 2 key fields of work -- IT Sales and Engineering. Given the nature of the business at Dell, you either make those PCs or sell them. Rest of the positions don't get much credit as a value-added resources (with one exception, perhaps, Help Desk Staff - but then again, that has been an after thought resulting from consumer backlash on Dell's earlier decision of out-sourcing.

Pros

1. If you want to live in Austin and like working for a big corporation, Dell is one of the few big employers in Austin. 2. Pay is average to good. It depends on where you are, but better than many smaller companies. 3. They let you work from home.

Cons

1. A lot of people at Dell got hired in with the .com boom and they're still there because they can't find a job that pays as much outside. Needless to say, the reason they can't find a job outside is because they're not worth what they make. 2. They expect you to be available 24/7. 3. The most bureaucratic company I've ever worked for. 4. If you are in IT, don't go there because they want to outsource all of it to India. 5. You have to work odd hours to be able to talk to the rest of your team, which will be in India. 6. Benefits are not that great and the stock purchase program is gone. 7. The best way to get promoted is to brown nose your way to the top, not based on hard work or merit.

Pros

Loads of autonomy and opportunity to own the set of responsibilities a specific role has. It’s a good place to learn and grow as long as your goal is to learn and grow and not to boot strap your way to some jive-assed job grade change by stepping on the necks of others.

Cons

The downsides revolve around a healthy dose of senior and executive level managers that are half involved in actual business issues. It’s very typical for leaders in the organization to devote the bulk of their time to their own career management and coordinating, not for actual business results, but rather to position material for the next ppt review. This issue often leads to hazy business goals, bailing on business vision and frequent organization restructuring – all of which leads to creating a vortex of crushed morals and ambiguity on purpose of walking into the doors each morning.
