Pros

Big 4 experience is a must to advance your career in the corporate/private sector. This is a great place to spend a couple of years for a big pay off.

Cons

Long hours and hard work, lots of politicking. Which can be said of any Big 4 job. Must be cream of the crop to be promoted.

Pros

Ernst & Young is a great place to work in terms of the audit group. The firm is truly a global organization and sets high standards for the quality of the work produced. You can learn a very broad skill set that is transferable including the skills to manage projects/people, leadership skills, technical accounting skills, and even sales/business development skills as you move up the ranks. There is tremendous opportunity within the audit practice and as you move up the ranks, there is more flexibility with the job.

Cons

Compensation is a huge issue here, as it may be with the other Big 4 firms. There is always the incentive to jump ship to a client or other private company to have better overall compensation and more work/life balance, especially after having 3-4 years of experience. Work/life balance can be a struggle for a lot of people at the firm if they happen to work with the wrong people or the wrong industry. Overall, people, on average, tend to work more than their counterparts outside of public accounting and this is something that probably will never go away until you make partner.

Pros

Ernst & Young is a highly visible and generally respected organization in its industry space. Outsider perceptions are that it is a highly efficient, reliable, and ethical auditing house. Working for EY generally gives outsiders the perception that you are a highly competent professional. There are opportunities for flexibility in managing the work/life balance and some of the benefits are rather useful.

Cons

The current reorganization has left the IT Services organization in complete disarray, with the separate internal organizations fighting for turf at the management level to the point of malice. Many of the staff are in positions for which they are under-qualified and would be more useful in a role more suited to them. Hard work is rarely rewarded or even acknowledged, leading a lot of people to just try to remain unnoticed by doing the bare minimum - mostly administrative.
