Pros

Great teammates, hybrid work environment, good tech stack to work on. The people (not the leadership) that you work with are great. I have rarely met anyone working here that I did not enjoy working with. In your teams, there seems to be a lot of concern for your work and well being. Sadly, that does not continue up the chain to leadership. As a hybrid company, offices are 'closed' on Monday and Friday, and you have to be in at least 2 of the other days a week, which is not a terrible situation. The technology being utilized at Cap One is great, and offers a lot of opportunity to learn or enhance your skills.

Cons

'Quiet' layoffs, cut throat stack ranking, too much favoritism in promo panels. Cap One laid off ~1k people in January of 2023, and I assume it must have not fared well in the PR world, so they decided to quietly lay people off by using the stack ranking to manage them out instead. Many people who did fine work got pushed into a 'Below Strong' category at mid year, and where that used to get a coaching plan to get back to strong, every one of those people (15% of the company) got PIP's, which they were not going to come back from. They just did the same thing at end of year. Picture losing 25% of your employees, not to attrition, but no mention of a layoff.

Pros

Note- last year there was 2018, would not allow that option. Employee engagement always high priority.

Cons

Note- last year there was 2018, would not allow that option. Highly focused on sales vs service.

Pros

Some of the smartest individuals in their fields. The focus is always “forward” and the company is willing to adopt new tech to stay ahead for the purposes of the company’s (key word there) benefit. Great PTO and benefits.

Cons

The company’s drive to keep itself moving forward has caused it to regress in other aspects. As a leading tech company first, and leading bank second, it’s embarrassing what their stance is on hybrid and remote work. The company can easily accommodate remote options for their employees not near main offices, but chooses not to. I am relocating to a major city with no major CapOne presence and their response was “too bad, either fly up weekly or you’ll be terminated for not meeting the hybrid requirements”. It’s embarrassing because most of my week is remote anyways. I wonder how many current and past employees have been impacted, and I’m worried about how much talent they’ll be pushing away in the coming years.
