Morale/energy levels can be low at times among team members. There seems to be a lack of passion among most members of any given engineering team, and managers don't seem to be helping out much in that regard - it's a difficult problem to solve.
Although there is a lot of independence, there isn't a lot of room for upward mobility. I've had multiple conversations with managers about moving into a different role/level of responsibility, to which they've responded positively, but I've yet to see any sort of effort on their side. I've had to seemingly work around them to start doing what i'd like to do.
