Pros

The starting pay was better than average for a job right out of school. There were a some good "perks" while I worked there as well, including tickets to professional ball. Most of the co-workers were really great people as well.

Cons

LONG, LONG, LONG hours. Employees are expexcted to work 60 - 80 hrs/wk. You're expected to sacrafice your personal life at "all costs" to the greater good of the company. I witnressed many, many divorces while employed there. You are often expected to work holidays. Of the 7 holidays they recognized last year, (ie - emplyees were suppose to have them off) employees at my last jobsite were only given two last. Employee's were NOT compensated, even though our paychecks deducted holiday pay from them. My last manager even said "Christmas is just for our families". The endles amounts of pointless paperwork boarder on corporate paranoia regarding Kiewit's responsibility. Employees are under extreme work conditions where management constantly threatens individual's jobs, yell, and swear. When you attempt to talk to district management about the conditions, they imply that it's for the employee's good, that it's good experience to go through the abuse. If you miss work because you're out sick, management has been known to make of fun of the employee, and make side-remarks while in meetings _ I never missed a day because of this. While compensation just out of school is ok, raises are based on economic conditions, not employee performance. A compensation freeze was put into effect this year, even though the company has experienced record breaking profits over the past 3 years (the recession didn't hurt them). So the 70+ hrs you put in DON'T mean anything.

Pros

Very Safety oriented, outfitted their crews with supplies and equipment without question, listened to employee questions and concerns and addressed them. Provided good facilities with heat and A/C as needed, coffee machines, microwaves, refrigerators, etc. Union contractor with the associated pay and benefits. Known to be an employer where people stay long term.

Cons

Long hours and detail oriented work but thats just the nature of the work. Some of the safety restrictions were a bit overboard.

Pros

Able to work on cool projects and potential to make a lot of money with cola

Cons

If you're ambitious at all, I probably wouldn't recommend working here. The pay is decent and if you're willing to stick around for 20+ years, you'll likely do just fine. But for me, the pace was too slow, the work was boring, and I never felt like I was doing anything meaningful or driving real business impact. The company is very stable, but that stability comes with tradeoffs. Career progression felt like a slow grind, and there was always the possibility of being forced to relocate depending on business needs. Personally, if you're young, motivated, and want to accelerate your career, I'd look for a role where you're directly contributing to growth, revenue, or strategic decision-making. If you're set on finance/FP&A, Kiewit can be a good place to spend a year and build experience, but I'd use it as a stepping stone rather than a long-term destination. Just my experience. —it just wasn't for me. - stayed 2 years - too long.
