Pros
Despite attrition of great performers over the past couple years, there are still many talented and wonderful people. However, key non-manager performers are now having to carry more and more on their backs.
Cons
- Counterproductive organizational structure - Extreme matrix management - Product and innovation reporting into Marketing, led by an exceptional marketer who isn't an effective leader outside of that domain - Executive leadership are mostly not technologists, former engineers, or product leaders. There is a never-ending focus on arbitrary delivery or launch dates when not truly required. This frequently ignores recommendations of engineers, product managers, and designers. - Many large scale digital initiatives fail or fall short. A common pattern is VPs are pressured to give the illusion that everything is on track and under control, when that's not true. - Tech debt accumulates constantly, leading to brittle, half-baked solutions (see "date-driven") and senior management not understanding why the organization isn't more agile.
