Pros

If you want to work for a large international NGO, this is one of the largest. Also has a faith component to their work.

Cons

There is next to 0 growth opportunity. I was advised by multiple director level employees (15-30 years ahead of me career wise) to leave the organization. One said to come back at the end of my career after working for a place that was willing to invest in their employees. The other said to never come back and instead only be a consultant if I was still interested in NGO work. Over my 3ish years with the organization I constantly saw others in the early years of their career (2-5 years), highly educated and capable, leave the organization. They all ran into the same thing, lack of opportunity. They are constantly outsourcing jobs to shared service centers around the globe, which is both able to cut the amount of jobs for westerners and they're then able to chalk those new jobs up as "program" related to boost their admin/program percentages. Obviously, this is great for those countries and their local economies, but terrible if you're looking to start a career here. The numbers I saw were something like 12 West African FTEs were the same cost as 1 American. Departments in the US are constantly trimming employees or not replacing staff when they move on. On paper, all their "values" sound great. Unfortunately, once you're in the door and the higher you climb the more waste you see. Ex: regional meetings in Fiji instead of cost sensible hubs, etc. The vast majority of employees lack a sense of responsibility with regard to the fact that they're typically spending donations. I never have and never will give them a dime.

At World Vision, our people are our greatest asset, because of this and wanting you to know that your comments and suggestions are heard, I thought it worthwhile to respond to you directly. World Vision strives to support all employees through their career development and fulfillment as they work with us helping provide sustainable solutions to the world's most vulnerable children. Whether working from an office, from home, or with children- we greatly value all employee contributions and dedication. Moreover, as an organisational philosophy, World Vision seeks to build the capacity of those who work for us in the countries where we are providing assistance. We are very proud that more than 99% of our staff now works in their home countries - this provides a sustainable partnership around the world with trained professionals who have a unique understanding of the communities they are serving and investing into - their own! Regardless of location, every World Vision staff member is given career and development opportunities through our "Total Rewards" philosophy. And currently 81% of our global staff say "they have opportunities to learn new skills that help me succeed" - taken from our 2017 annual employee survey. Although we're proud of this rating, we know that there's room for improvement and we are always honing and refining our internal talent development initiatives. I am very sorry to read that you feel that you did not have the ability to succeed at World Vision, your reputed experience is one that we do not wish for any employee to have. But please note, that contrary to what you mentioned, we do have required career path tools in place, quarterly and annual goal check-in's, and all managers are encouraged to work with their employees to help advance their learning, development, and career goals with World Vision.
