Pros

IBM is extremely progressive in work/life balance. You can work at home pretty much whenever you want/need to. The number of sick days is unlimited. There are no timesheets to fill out for most professional workers. Some employees work part time, and parental leave is up to 3 years (unpaid). There is paid parental leave: 6 weeks for new moms, and 2 weeks for new dads. Overall, coworkers are very helpful and willing to go out of their way to help you.

Cons

Long hours tend to be the norm at this company, and some people burn out. The downside to working at home is that sometimes you are expected to be constantly connected. There is a lot of schedule-driven quality (i.e. the schedule is king, and quality falls by the wayside). Worst of all, IBM has very strict transfer rules. You can only transfer to another department with your manager's approval, and sometimes they don't give it. I wanted to transfer from digital design to hardware simulation, and even though the new department knew me very well and wanted me, the process took over 1 year.

Pros

Employees' experience within IBM varies greatly from team to team and finding the correct fit can be difficult but if/when you find the right the team it's a fantastic place to work.

Cons

A lot of projects at IBM are insanely boring. IBM is more than willing to pigeon hole individuals into positions that don't interest them.

Pros

I have enjoyed the past 35 years with IBM due to the nature of the work followed by the professional group of coworkers and a solid management team. The technology growth has been challanging and fun. The workload has been great but the team support has allowed us to meet very aggressive schedules. The sensitivity of the management team has provided me and my family with a balanced life. The benefits package is very good compared to our other competition. My plan is to retire at the end of 2009 with a very rewarding career and a good pension.

Cons

All major companies have areas that could be improved. I have found that the budgeting process for each department and division needs some improvement. Also at times the management team has a tendency to assign more people to do the same job. This could and is being addressed by eliminating redundency. There should also be more skip level meetings with the sr. management team to get a better understanding of the divisions business strategy. This would help the team work toward a common goal.
