Pros

Huge diverse company. You can move around a lot within one company/sector, or explore other sectors around the world. They will help you fulfill your career dreams, whether that means staying on a technical track, management track, or moving around to different functions. There are so many resources out there...big company resources with a small company feel. Since it's decentralized there is some freedom for how each company is run. Also, the credo is really a part of our daily lives, and people take it seriously. It is easy to feel proud working for a company like J&J, since the products make a difference in many people's lives.

Cons

Due to decentralization, sometimes there isn't enough communication between departments/sectors/companies, so there is an opportunity for more levaraging.

Pros

Other than the salary, the benefits package was attractive. J&J health insurance plan was very good and included dental and eye care for a small fee. The retirement plan 401k was excellent - they matched 75 cents out of 1 dollar that you contributed to a maximum of 6%. It is a diverse workforce and you can learn a lot from your peers.

Cons

J&J has no training program for new employees and out of college students. I started working with J&J as a COOP and I remembering walking and walking cause I had nothing to do. Eventually I looked for work myself and after a couple of month I had more work that I could handle. Everyone recognized my name, as the guy to go for any facilities issues. However I won that myself. There was no training, no guidance and certainly no mentoring. In addition, I always had issues with HR. They always had the incorrect answer to my question. That was the only department in the whole company that I considered incompetent (very ironic). When I quit my job due to another job offer that I had, nothing was done to retain me (but still today they call me to ask me questions) and they even forgot to perform my exit interview! My boss and even the plant manager, asked me a couple of times to rethink my decision, but no counteroffer was presented to me in writing.

Pros

The pay scale is excellent. The other monetary benefits (bonus, work incentives, raises) are also very satisfactory if you can achieve a good working relationship with your manager. While the benefits are not the best I have seen, they are adequate and cover most needs. The shift in health benefits from co-pay based to percentage based will pose a hardship for large families and those with chronic illnesses, but will save most employees money. Because J&J is comprised of dozens of companies (the reason it is called a "Family of Companies"), the growth opportunities are endless. Of course, this again means that you need to have a good working relationship with you boss or you need to know people. It is extremely important to cultivate relationships to move forward in your career there.

Cons

Like other large companies, J&J being one of the largest, there is a corporate culture of greed, racism and sexism. Women and people of color are treated poorly and face a hostile environment at best. While the Credo is held up as the model of behavior and the guiding force behind management decisions, it is rarely if ever utilized in any way other than to provide lip service to disillusioned employees. Management thinks nothing of cutting jobs, only to reinstate those same jobs a few months down the road as a contractor position or as a consolidated position. In the meantime, faithful J&J employees with decades of service find themselves looking for new jobs. It is a cold and unfriendly world, depending on the operating company in which you land. The most job security can normally be found at the corporate offices. Of course, with the Human Resources Transformation that is currently taking place, HR (traditionally one of the most secure areas) will be losing a huge number of employees who will be laid off as the transformation nears completion and transactional functions are contracted out.
