They tout diversity but not diversity of thought

Pros

Microsoft pays well and has the best benefits that I've ever seen for any company, especially for health insurance.

Cons

Microsoft feels very collegial and not in a good way. People who have been there for a long time call themselves "Softees". The top corporate leadership went to similar ivy league schools and have been there for more than 15 years, so they protect each other. It's very tough being a new manager to offer a different opinion, it's frowned on. They say they want people of diverse backgrounds to participate in introducing new ideas, but it's mostly lip service, since direct bosses will discourage it. Some bosses are frankly afraid, since they don't know anything else besides the "Softee" way. Microsoft works in a matrix leadership instead of a pyramid, which is unproductive and very political, since you most likely will not just have one boss, but a "skip" boss too that will compete to manage you. Middle management gets stuck in the middle, so it takes much longer to execute projects than it should be.

Pros

Challenging work Large variety of type of work to do Variety of people from all different walks of life

Cons

Management chain is a drag on completing work Org structure has too many managers who do not know what they're doing HR, C-Suite, and upper management could care less when your manager sucks Is more interested in keeping the "good ol' boys club" rather than acknowledging failure or accepting that alternative solutions are more effective Your new ideas are a threat to the company and their management chain Management doesn't know nearly as much as you, so they try to put you down and gaslight you HR could care less that you saw bad things, motto, "See something, report it", but reality is, "reporting something means you're the next to get fired" Mission statements are there only to lure you in, make you think they do good. They don't follow the mission themselves. Complete con-job

Pros

- Benefits - are amazing, they cater for everything non-work that you can think of - Stability - No matter what you know you're working for Microsoft

Cons

Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and company to achieve more but it often doesn't practice that in reality. Employee growth is touted as a vitally important part of their corporate culture with various constructs and processes that seem to also encourage this. However, no matter the policies, procedures or training, my experience has been nothing but the opposite. In my time, i've witnessed ableism towards colleagues that had disabilities and even myself once I developed a disability that I partially contribute to my experiences. I've also heard stories of Racism and discrimination too. Managers, teams etc were always talking in secret, sabotaging each others projects. Referring to each other negatively. Playing political games to get things done and generally making my life miserable. Eventually, I started struggling in my position beyond the above issues. I developed anxiety, stress and depression. The heightened level of anxiety in everything at work lead to me dreading starting work. The pandemic actually helped, at least I didn't have to be physically in the same location as the people who were causing the issues. During this time, I developed stress caused epilepsy. Too much stress I get a seizure... yay My manager never helped with these issues despite me asking. My skip level booked some meetings with me but always left early and said they'd re-schedule. They never did. HR of course is a no-go, they're designed to protect the company and don't really care about you. I felt I had nowhere to turn to, with my mental health declining and my sense of self worth flying out the window I had to leave. I'm exceptionally disappointed Call me Neurodiverse or whatever you want
