Toxic Place and Toxic CVP

Pros

Had an awesome team, deeply dedicated to their domain of expertise. Loved the work I did with them. The pay and benefits were really good comparatively to other companies. Did I say how awesome the ICs and my team was.... great, kind, humble (most of them anyway)

Cons

My new boss was toxic: I was screamed at, humiliated, and gaslit for; 6 months. I dropped 30 pounds from the stress and was throwing up every morning when my boss called threatening my career and livelihood. I was a high performer under my prior boss, the only difference now - the CVP above me that I reported to. They were a terror. CVP purposefully set out to destroy our team. Cut our team resources to nothing and then demanded we hit the same KPIs/ "Do more with less". CVP withheld critical information to make the team look less effective than other parts of their business. Very nasty/intentional -- played a game of favoritism and game of thrones. Very political. HR is often weaponized by underperformers - those people then abuse managers through blind survey or filing illegitimate complaints.. No one ever held accountable for filing BS claims - can say nasty things about you and degrade you; while their lawyers try to extort the company for money. Ugly game. HR does nothing to protect front line manager. HR irrelevant and not helpful, only objectives - protect the company and $ -- use a corrupt process. Became concerned for my safety and my family's safety as one employee that was mentally unhealthy threatened me personally. The most toxic environment imaginable.

Pros

Nothing more I want than to write an amazing review about this company. They have all the potential in the world to be the greatest employer on the planet. They pay well. Good benefits at 0 cost. Exposure to an amazing tech stack. You learn transferable skills. Opportunity to interview for promotions but you’re on your own to fight for yourself.

Cons

Satya hasn’t really talked about culture since Jan 2020. The espoused culture and lived experience are VERY different. Who your Manager is means everything to your success and your career as a whole. Too much variation between leaders within and across orgs. Every man for themselves mentality. When you think you mattered, you’re really just a number. Everyone is very disposable. They will set cash on fire to lay people off than properly performance manage. Culture is sometimes what you can do to create a name for yourself to be recognized. Hired hundreds of people only to lay many of them off just a few months later. They will fix problems at no expense or money or your soul. Again, who you work for will dictate your success.

Pros

The pros are the usual the likes of a big player in the IT sector ranging from career choices to products and product training, stock options and well being choices. Canteen choices and the office are a big plus. Especially if you're a junior in the industry, it can be a career boost.

Cons

Genereal hire and fire attitude with no real strategy behind it. Currently they are in layoff mood, however this may change at some point. Being successful in your role does mean having to be in the right team and having the right manager. Be warned, not every manager is honest and not every team is really a team. Cost of housing/renting and food is considerably more expensive than even Paris or London, so if you're offered a salary and not familiar with the real cost of renting/living in Dublin you're likely to get very poor choices. New hires are likely to get better salaries than longer serving employees which causes friction in the team as loyalty is not rewarded. Promotion to higher roles often depends on who knows whom, and if one is Irish or not. Diversity and inclusion isn't their strongest suit.
