Pros

Smart people to work with, great benefits. Fun/interesting technologies and products to work on.

Cons

Below average pay, no headcount growth thus no chance for advancement. The company focuses on retaining their Finish employees and they really don't care about their US employees. Constant threat of being offshored or jobs sent back to Finland. Schedules are unrealistic and you must work over time the whole year to make schedule. Five years ago, Nokia really focuses on work/life balance. Since 2006, in Irving, work/life balance went completely out the window. You get 4-5 weeks vacation (good) but can never take it due to constant schedule pressure (bad).

Pros

Nokia's security business is stable and thus layoffs are minimized. Overall Head Office policies are sound. Beautiful campus and a good cafeteria.

Cons

The security business in Mountain View is very poorly managed. The hostile relationship between Nokia (platform supplier) and Checkpoint (application supplier) allowed other companies to win business. The actual management in that organization is mediocre at best but they are very good at in-fighting especially between the Boston and California branches. Very juvenille. The company had a lot of issues integrating the security business into their overall business model. The marriage to Enterprise was questionable as there were few, if any, synergies. It really looked like a holding ground for people uninterested in challenging themselves.

Pros

Vacation on par with Europe, opportunities to work on projects outside the US. The majority of co-workers and lower level managers are quite bright and competent. The product portfolio is broad and seems to be accepted outside of the US marketplace.

Cons

NSN is organized in silos, but run as a matrix organization. To accomplish something as simple as a quote for an existing product requires configuration management from one team, pricing from another, project management from a third. The layoffs from post merger consolidation were very de-motivating to much of the workforce, and due to the inability to accomplish our goals, we've seen very high attrition as well. Since we're not replacing the people who move to other companies, the workload for those who remain continues to increase. Plus we're loosing the brightest, most innovative people and keeping those who are comfortable with the status quo.
