Pros

Inspiring mission/vision, and unique brand.

Cons

Most toxic culture I’ve ever experienced in tech - and have experienced a lot in Silicon Valley. Think Game of Thrones meets Squid Game meets Lord of the Flies. Territory wars and politics, self-preservation above all else, and run by immature leaders. Poor leadership lacks focus and alignment. Too much energy spent on gaining clout and self-preservation vs focusing on what’s best for the greater good of the products and company. Managers quick to throw others under the bus, including their own employees vs taking responsibility/accountability for the performance of their teams. Leaders from different teams/orgs fighting over ownership of the same work, causing ICs to be caught in the middle, unclear on their priorities and job duties. A lot of politics and alliances - success for individuals and teams depends highly on who you know and have relationships with. Many low-performers make it far because of the friends they have, and their performance reviews are ignored. Extremely toxic culture towards women and minorities. Org leader publicly made fun of those whose English is a second language, commented on political beliefs of others, and openly expressed disdain of children and those who have them. On the ground reality is a far cry from the inclusive, collaborative, mission-oriented PR Rivian puts out. Company priorities and program plans changing very frequently causing a lot of thrash and whiplash for teams - results in low motivation and morale as anything can be canceled or deprioritized at a moments notice, seemingly without much strategy or reasoning. Decisions are frequently made and then reversed.

No Work Life Balance

Pros

Most people are great to work with, intelligent and hard working.

Cons

Inexperienced management with poor leadership skills. Also, Rivian is so understaffed that the expectation is to work extra hours to make up for this with no overtime. They have a huge staff turnover as they burn everyone out. To check this fact out, look online and see the high number of ex employees from this company in its very short life span. They have an unlimited PTO policy which means zero when everyone still works during their time off but that is to say if you are even able to take time off. Health benefits are okay, nothing special and 401k is below par. Life Insurance however is quite good but short and long term disability is quite low compared to other companies in this area that are at 80-100%. The office environment is extraordinary loud with elevator music playing all day and so many people speaking so loud, you end up with a headache at the end of the day. Many people in the office bring their own noise canceling headphones from home to wear all day to block out the noise.

Rivian Response

Thank you for your review. I’m very sorry to hear you didn’t have as satisfying an experience at Rivian as you’d hoped, though glad to hear you appreciated your colleagues. As some time has passed since you posted this review, I’d hope that if you were still here you’d have seen some positive changes as we are hiring more people to share the ambitious workload. Another reviewer indicated that we’d hired too many people—so we’re very focused on trying to strike the right balance. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience. Helen, Chief People Officer.

Pros

Innovative, fun work environment, great pay and good benefits. Good group of people for the most part to work for.

Cons

No employee loyalty. They will let you go once you have finished what they needed from you. Young people running the company looking at short term rather than long term success.
