Pros

Can be a fun work environment on certain days, benefits are pretty good. You meet people and friends you'll never forget.

Cons

Lack of communication/feedback from upper management, too many people trying to do different things with the same team. Workload is crazy with little to no recognition or help to complete

Pros

The benefits are pretty comparable to other businesses. Target is a great place to work if you are looking to get your foot in the door for an entry level management position. 10% discount on overpriced merchandise.

Cons

Target boasts about being accepting of diversity. Unfortunately, this has not been my personal experience especially with gays. Target used to be a laid back and understanding company. In the last few years, these attributes have declined just like the economy. The worthless team members/leaders can call in to excess with no reprimand, but the most valuable ones are given pure hell for even one day missed. Target is all about speeding people up ("Speed is life") to the point that they can no longer perform their jobs accurately or efficiently and quickly resorts to corrective action when the expected results cease to exist. They cut payroll to less than a skeleton crew but still expect the team to perform miracles. Target is a big advocate for a paper trail, so document everything you do good/bad for your own protection. They limit how many excellent/outstanding review scores can be given out. Even if a team member deserves an excellent score they may not receive it because Target cannot afford to give that many raises. This is very unfair to the thousands of team members that work hard day in and day out to make Target "the best company ever." Target fairly recently implemented a new policy that requires newly hired executives to have a four year degree, so there is not much room for promotion without a degree. These executives they hire are about as intelligent as a box of rocks. Management is constantly changing. ETLs ride us about one extra minute on a break, but they spend 3 hours in Starbucks talking about nothing that pertains to Target. Promotions are given to the most corrupted people that play the best game of politics not for competency or merit. Training is basically non existant for any level below an ETL. It's more like throwing some one in the middle of the ocean and seeing if they sink or swim. All in all Target lives up to its motto "Expect more, pay less."

Pros

Target provides employees with opportunities to advance themselves and receive training. They also have an employee hotline that can be used if employees feel uncomfortable speaking to management. Their processes from appraisals to "best practices" help drive organization and cohesion.

Cons

Work / life balance is difficult as an exec at Target. They expect a lot and sometimes with limited payroll and resources. This leads execs to take the burden on their own back and work extra long hours to over compensate. Target has a performance based culture which at times is borderline too aggressive. Turnover among execs is high. In addition to this, the pressure placed on Store Team Leads and District Team Leads is high. Sometimes this pressure leads management to make poor decisions about personnel movement and retention. Politics also need to be regulated at the district level.
