Pros

compassionate, caring employees who really care about the mission interesting, challenging work and you can definitely be "stretched" if you are willing to go for it benefits are fantastic lots of opportunity for paid time off, but the availability sometimes depends on your particular manager your co-workers take the time to understand what you're doing and say "thank you" looks good on your resume

Cons

constantly re-organizing and changes at top management levels dictate constant turnover many times, better opportunities are given to people coming from the outside vs. looking at internal talent

Pros

I needed a part time job and the hours fit my family schedule. I work in the school age childcare program, and I was able to work the morning shift only. This was convenient for me.

Cons

My immediate management team was not great at communicating, and hesitant to address problems with staff or program participants (ie childcare program parents). Not always accessible during hours when staff is on site. I also feel that they let personal friendships with staff get in the way of effective leadership. I had staff at my site that was very hesitant to do any more than the bare minimum. I would take the time to make a monthly lesson plan and this was never followed. Everytime I passed along activities to them from management, they ignored them and the tasks were never completed. Management did not back me up in getting the staff to do their job! There were also several occasions when problem children should have been removed from the program and were not.

Pros

You gain a feel good sense about yourself and you get to spend time with people whose lives you may change. You get to watch the children grow up over time and when theyre older and becoming adults you see them and they remember you. It does give a feel good feeling but at the same time people need to make a living. Our facility is beautiful because the building has a rich history that we boast as one of the oldest YMCA's in the world. Those looking to just simply start a career should look at the YMCA.

Cons

Our full time employees all qualify for welfare if single. Management sometimes is inconsiderate of the directors at our Y and make us feel unimportant. We get very minimal pay raises if any at all sometimes. Managements looks down upon us and I feel that our YMCA caters to the rich and wealthy. There are very little activities for youth/teen to do but alot for older welathy individuals. If you are looking for a high paying job than the YMCA is not for you. However if your looking for a feel good feeling and dont need to worry about fanaces, than the Y is for you.
