Pros

The company has a rich history and a deep bench of technical experts. The UL logo is globally recognized and synonymous with safety, which carries real weight in the market. For clients familiar with UL, that brand trust can be a significant competitive advantage.

Cons

The company has been changing rapidly over the last five years, and even more so since going public. A new Sales VP was brought in from the SaaS world - someone who found success at a fast-growing tech company and is now trying to transplant that same approach into UL. But UL isn’t a startup; it’s a 130-year-old company that’s never truly operated in "growth mode." The result has been a significant culture clash. The aggressive, high-pressure, numbers-driven sales approach - typical of Silicon Valley or Texas tech firms - doesn't translate well to an organization built around scientific integrity, deep expertise, and long-term client relationships. There’s a noticeable disconnect between legacy business units and the leadership's new direction. Some parts of the business, especially those that don't fit the SaaS mold, are being deprioritized or left to fend for themselves. Meanwhile, the Sales VP and the cohort of SaaS-focused hires he brought in continue to double down on strategies that may work elsewhere, but often miss the mark in this context. It’s created instability, internal competition, and a loss of institutional knowledge.

First of all, thank you for your thoughtful review, we genuinely appreciate it when someone takes the time to give us feedback. We are immensely proud of our 130-year history, our contributions to safety science worldwide and our great people who have and continue to help deliver on our mission. While we have been growing and changing at a rapid pace since our IPO in 2024. Our mission is unchanged; to help make the world a safer place. This may seem like a culture clash to some but know that changes made by our senior leadership are the result of thoughtful decisions to ensure UL Solutions can continue working for a safer world long into the future. We will always endeavor to deliver on our mission but doing so in the modern age requires changes that may be an uncomfortable adjustment for some. Employees who leave UL Solutions can request an exit interview to share their thoughts. We are open to this type of feedback and value your willingness to share. Pros

There are some genuine great people that work at UL Solutions which makes leaving this bad review tough. Unfortunately they are not given the time or opportunity to thrive due to management tribalism.

Cons

Buying companies with no strategy and have no idea what to do with them. Disinterested management team that don't seem to care about the products or clients. There seems to be no drive to improve. Epitomised by their outdated software solutions. Happy to sell incomplete products that don't work. A "Ship it how it is, get the client to pay for the development and sell it back to them" mindset. Stuck in a 00's mindset. Including the internal and external processes. Toxic work environment. Gaslighting is rife. Managers that don't know what they're doing and are out of their depth with little to no true skills in their supposed area of expertise. Therefore there is no guidance when the going gets tough. They are order givers, not leaders. Expected to work outrageous hours due to lack of any cohesive process. You'll be made to feel like you're crazy for challenging the status quo. Dare question people and you will be made an example of. People happy to collect their pay checks, don't care about service or delivery. Don't even think about highlighting issues, they don't want to know, this would mean they'd have to do something. Great company if you like anxiety.
