Pros

It has great benefits and you get alot of stuff for nothing! It lets you travel and your time counts toward a retirement as early as 45 years of age depending on some principles and certain things.

Cons

You are at their mercy, you dont decide what you want to do. Very often times you are put in a position to lead but your not allowed to lead, your just the person they get to holler at if anything goes wrong. Trust me, something is gonna go wrong. Alot of the senior leaders dont know what the other one is doing and your always getting conflicted information which means half are doing it right and the other half are doing it wrong. But since one half did it wrong now everyone has to have a do over. If we were a major commercial/private business, we'd be closed down by now. This job is wasteful and alot of money spent on things that aren't needed. The money makes it to senior leaders and they order new furniture for example for themselves meanwhile the maintenance office printer is on an end table thats over 25 years old but we dont have money for that. Or how about the fact that the workers spend what they need in replacement parts but the unit cant supply money for a raise or even renew the contract for people to continue to clean the bathrooms!!!

Pros

Overall, the benefits are great and you can serve in the armed service while still maintaining quality of life. Full medical and dental coverage (if you are not satisfied with your care provider you can request another through Tricare). There is also access to gyms for as long as you hold a military ID. Most of these gyms are well equipped. Also, most units allow employees to spend additional time in the gym during working hours as mission requirements allow. Allowances for housing and food based on location and members of household. If used wisely, this division of salary enables one to budget and save huge.

Cons

Being in the right clique too often get one further than skills or work ethic. I've seen people protected those who deserve lose it all and those who should have been protected striped of everything. Rank is used to control more often than to lead. This character flaw is resulting in the loss of a number of junior members with potential. The smallest part of the whole service (pilots) are placed in leadership positions they are not qualified to lead and many are not willing to learn. Ex. Fighter pilots are not able to lead an intelligence squadron to it's full potential and so many are too cocky to learn from their senior intelligence officers and sergeants.

Pros

Great retirement benefits after 20 years of service. Great travel opportunities (relocations every 2-4 years). The opportunity to work with a huge cross-section of America. The (perceived) prestige of fighting for a noble cause (our country).

Cons

Although my normal work week is Mon through Fri, I am constantly "on call" and often have to work 12 hour days. Also, there's the constant threat of being deploying for up to one year at a time (although it's typically for 4 or 6 months) to austere environments (Afghanistan, Iraq, etc.). It's definitely not a "family friendly" job, its benefits are excellent. Homeownership is not always an option.
