Pros

You can go to college when you're done.

Cons

Strangers might shoot at you. You will absolutely get screwed over by leadership at some point. When you become a leader, you'll still get screwed over by leadership, with the added bonus of taking all the heat for your soldier's screw ups. Strangers might shoot at you. You'll spend an inordinate amount of time doing nothing while you wait for someone higher up to either make or enforce a decision. Your injuries don't matter in the infantry. Your family doesn't matter in the infantry. Strangers might shoot at you. You'll spend hours "working" on vehicles and equipment with inadequate funding for necessary supplies. You'll be forced to pay for non-issued equipment for arbitrary packing lists, and when you mention to your leadership the exorbitant costs of said materials, they'll hand you a weak excuse. "The good ones get out," is a common phrase.

Pros

Great opportunity for those who are motivated. There is a direct correlation between how hard you work and promotion. They have amazing programs for student loan repayment and attending college for free while on active duty.

Cons

Just like anywhere else you're going to deal with some terrible leadership. The army is not immune to this, most of the people complaining about the leadership has no frame of reference since they joined straight out of high school. Overall it's a great place, it sounds cliche but, I traveled the world on the army's dime and experienced countries and things I would have never dreamed of from my small town background.
