Pros

Had steady pay, housing, meals, free uniforms, free health care, most holidays off, traveled the US and Europe/Far East, met lots of people, challenging

Cons

Might work long hours (not a typical 9-5 job) and have weekend/holiday duties. Working conditions may be harsh - sweltering swamp, hot desert, frigid mountains with little to no human comforts.

Pros

Opportunity to serve the country, and your community Variety of experiences, regardless of your job description Travel, see places most others can't

Cons

It's not a meritocracy Not a 9-5 job; long hours and weekends expected Limited flexibility in career progression Some public disapproval - especially from those who don't really understand why you serve (those that don't understand that you serve to /prevent/ war) Socialized healthcare; you're covered, but often inefficient
