Pros

Pay and benefits are good relative to similar jobs. There aren't many jobs for "unskilled" workers that offer a salary competitive with soldiering, and the benefits are outstanding. Working as a combat soldier affords some unique opportunities. It is very rewarding to challenge yourself both physically and mentally during field operations and come out on top.

Cons

The amount of time spent in the field can be tremendous. Be prepared for at least one week a month away from home. If you're junior enlisted, don't expect any privacy. Your personal life will be aggresively monitored by non-commissioned officers. For those with families, the frequent overseas deployments can be a real drag.
