Pros

The medical benefits for part time employees are great. The department and store managers are typically great to work with. They have an onsite HR person to talk to if you have any issues. They are flexible with work schedules and you can cross train in multiple departments. Tuition reimbursement is great.

Cons

It is really hard to get a full time position at all, let alone one in a department where you want to work. Also near impossible to move into corporate offices without having someone you are related to already working there. You have to be willing to work nights and weekends due to the store hours.

Pros

They permit time off when necessary, especially for students. The changed to a "knowledge based" learning, so that employees have greater knowledge of what they are doing, and why. This bit of ownership into the work that they do increased morale and potential sales as the lower level employees were more enthusiastic about their work.

Cons

While store management is generally university educated, the lower management rarely is, and it shows in their management style. Store level, the senior management is much more concerned with profits than they are with the smooth operation of a grocery store, and expect one employee to do the work of several. The first thing cut when the profits of a store decrease are employee hours, which leads to very bad morale and decreased customer service. They went to the education based learning, but expect employees to initutively have the skills for the position. Again, poor morale, and decreased customer service.

Pros

Their scheduling is VERY flexible and the work is pretty easy. Another thing I have to say is that they really do care about their employees, and they have admitted in a video presentation to the employees that this is mainly because their employee medical benefits (for full-timers, which I am not) are one of their biggest and most actively rising costs. Because of this, they are encouraging employees to eat and live healthy. They do this through free medical screenings and a program called Eat Well Live Well, which they plan encouraging neighboring stores in many of their locations to join.

Cons

The management is not that respectful to the employees at some of the stores (on the store level). Once you start working your way up it is not too bad, but the entry level sucks. The larger stores are run better than the smaller stores, counter to intuitive expectations. The larger stores get all the money and funding, leaving the smaller stores to make with what they have. Also, the larger stores are more lenient when it comes to taking breaks and aren't as strict about certain policies which is completely unfair to those who work at the smaller stores.
