Poor management

Pros

Interesting topic areas and good company benefits

Cons

Middle management hold up any potential progress. Some are OK but some have been promoted and risen up ranks only because they look like senior leadership and have been at the company a long time; bringing no real value to the roles they have and creating a very toxic team culture where they ignore skills and experience of others because they see them as a direct threat.

Egocentric senior leadership

Pros

Most colleagues at director level and below are driven and passionate, few VPs and SVPs are seasoned industry veterans. Company provides good work life balance with increasing flexible options. Perks like PTO, healthcare benefits are one of the best in the industry. Company could do better on parental leave policy, definitely getting better. Overall good option for young analysts who want to learn about energy markets.

Cons

While working with other analysts, consultants and managers can be rewarding, people sitting at senior management are some of the most clueless and egocentric individuals. They make decisions in their ivory tower in the UK and roll them out at their whim. Even as some non-monetary perks are above average, salaries can be uneven across the company. The company claims to be investing in energy transition as the growth engine but best salaries are still reserved for employees in the oils business. The process for annual reviews and promotions is opaque and punishes all round performance and only benefits if you play their game. For obvious reasons, employees in fossil fuel teams, including some with the biggest social media presence, are egregiously dismissive of energy transition. It seems as if their only job is to protect themselves and their clients from what's been the writing on the wall on climate change. Those dismissive views come out in almost every meeting, reports and social media.

Poor year for WoodMac

Pros

Very smart employees, many are decent people.

Cons

A terrible financial year and therefore very poor pay rises and bonuses. Verisk, our parent company have now set impossible targets for 2020 so it will be the same again next year. This will of course continue. Advice to anyone who is not VP or above....get out now!
