Worst internship experience

Pros

You get to meet and interact with interesting scientists

Cons

Interns are abused - they work for free, but yet are asked to do tremendous amount of work with very little reward/recognition. Their skills and outputs are claimed as the organization's and they don't get recognition for it.

Came for internship, stayed on for years.

Pros

Very flexible, with options to work from home. The amenities are great: extensive kitchens, multiple conference rooms, etc. The dress code and general atmosphere is casual. My paid internship was $15/hour, which is very high for a non-profit internship.

Cons

Since I was not a contracted employee, it was always up in the air whether my position would be extended. The decision makers regarding any situation may not work in the same office or even the same country.

World Wildlife Fund is a great place to work.

Pros

The work is meaningful. The benefits are great. Most of the people working there are really nice, too, and good at what they do.

Cons

There is some bureaucracy and, as is common in the nonprofit world, decisions sometimes are made slowly and so there are cases of “hurry up and wait.” Even with the drawbacks, however, World Wildlife Fund is one of the best organizations I’ve ever worked for.
