Dear Traditional Job Boards, I'm breaking up with you. I'm writing you this letter so you can fully understand why we can no longer be in this vendor relationship. Look, we had a good run back in the day. Remember those times? When I was desperate and you were our best option? The fact is, there are better options out there, now. Social media, open web technology and career websites like Glassdoor are making you obsolete. Don't act like you didn't know this has been coming for quite some time. Years ago I started to measure more than just how many applicants you sent me and the numbers just weren't adding up. I told my hiring managers this. Yet, we still kept posting jobs with you and I kept giving you a chance. Even though your prices went up, my hires from you kept going down. I started to realize that when I really thought about our relationship, it was becoming pretty one sided. Honestly, I feel like we've grown apart.  I've become more proactive in how I attract great talent to my company and, well, you're still living in a reactive world. Because I know how hard this must be for you to understand, let me break it down for you. Here are the top five reasons I just can't do it anymore: 1. Something's not adding up.You're expensive and I don't get what I need in return. You take up my recruiter's time with all the irrelevant candidates you send to their open positions that they have to then spend lot of time weeding through. I'd rather they spend that time talking to candidates that are qualified for their positions. When it comes to cost-per-hire and time-to-fill, you're behind, and the statistics aren't in your favor. I need a job site that lowers my costs and increases results by bringing me higher quality candidates over volume. 2. You just don't get me. I'm looking for someone who really cares. Someone who shares my values and understands where I'm coming from and what I need. While you're feeding me low-quality resumes, I'm looking for high-quality and informed candidates. The bottom line? You're just not measuring up. Not to mention you don't give my company many opportunities to truly express itself through great employer branding. 3. You're not giving me what I need. Part of any successful relationship is awareness. With you, my brand is suffering - without company profiles, candidates aren't finding me, which means I miss out on that perfect catch. Let's face it…your SEO isn't quite what it used to be either. 4. You're not marriage material. I just don't see the long-term pay here. Without company ratings and reviews, my candidates are left in the dark. Why would they apply for a job if they can't tell what it's actually like to work here every day? As a typical big job board, you aren't answering the most important questions candidates have. I need transparency in my recruitment marketing relationship. 5. I don't see myself growing old with you. I'm wasting time while there's something better waiting out there for me. Because I can't measure my competitors, I'm missing out on the inside scoop. If I can't measure and access first-rate analytics, what's the point of staying in this relationship? While I'm spending time with you, I'm losing time, money and top talent. I'm honestly tired of knowing more about how your services work than you do. Guess what? I just ran a source-of-hire report and it's not looking good. Oh, and…I've found someone else. There's someone who can give me and other recruiters the things we need for finding success with recruiting in today's modern workforce- and that someone is Glassdoor. Sincerely, Will If you've ever experienced any of these frustrations with your current job board (which, let's be honest, you probably have), it's time to make the switch.
