I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA) in Dec 2011
Interview
I was contacted by their internal recruiter 4 months after making an online application to schedule for a phone screening interviewing in the next 2 weeks. Two weeks later i had one detailed phone interview covering both technical and practical experience related question for slightly more than an hour. A similar phone interview was setup after about 3 weeks to speak with someone else from the hiring team.
After about 3 weeks on completing the phone screens, i was invited for an onsite interview, all expenses covered since i was not a local candidate. Onsite interview started at 10.30 and it took an entire day involving 1:1 boardroom one hr interview schedules with a member of the hiring team including over lunch hour. Interview was quite thorough asking detailed technical questions on skills of interest and scenario practical questions with each member of the hiring team, in total about 7 at the close of the day, no break in between.
From my observation, it seems its an organization with a start-up feel but growing very rapidly. The people i spoke are smart, fast paced and are out to get an all rounded best of the best. Dress is very casual with everyone almost wearing jeans. Very nice offices with homely break rooms with game rooms too and dog friendly buildings with onsite cafeteria system

Interview
The recruting process was negative as it mis-matched my application vs position&interview. The second phone interivew was informed after more than a month after the 1st interview.
The interviewers were both late (one is late for 5 min, and the second late for 20 min). the interview itself is not difficult. One is around resume and relevent expereince and the other is technical interivew.
